TRIP PROFILE
The trip starts in Bangkok and the meeting point is Novotel Living: https://www.novotellivingbangkoklegacy.com/ located in the city center in Sukhumvit area.
Due to the current border closing between Thailand and Cambodia. We arrange the flight booking from Bangkok to Phnom Penh and the airport transfers.
The tour will start from Phnom Penh where mountain bikes are prepared and the guide will brief on the cycling tour. The scenery from Phnom Penh to Kampong Chhnang, Pursat and Battambang are amazing with beautiful countryside of Cambodia. From Battambang we follow the orginial itinerary to Siem Reap, we will cross Tonle ap lake by boat, visit the ancient Angkor temples, the same way as Indiana Jones did.
We ride about 375 km mostly on asphalt roads and sometimes broken road or vehicle-width dirt roads, which may be smooth, gritty, stony, rocky, rutted, loose or hard-packed. The 85km from Pailin to Battambang is probably the worst road but still interesting things to see along the road.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Bangkok- Phnom Penh
Pick up from the hotel in Bangkok, Novotel Legacy: https://www.novotellivingbangkoklegacy.com/ and transfer to the airport for the flight to Phnom Penh. Welcome by our guide and transfer to your hotel for tour briefing and welcome dinner. (D)
Day 2: Phnom Penh – Kampong Chhnang (75km)
Breakfast at the hotel. We start our day with a transfer 45mins to start our cycling along Tonle Sap river. We stop for lunch in Kampong Trolanch. After lunch, we cycle on one of the most beautiful countryside to Kampong Chhnang. Dinner and overnight in Kampong Chhnang. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Kampong Chhang - Pursat (65km)
After breakfast, we cycle from our hotel to visit Clay Pottery village. The hand made pottery is their family business and the skill have been passed from their parents and grand parent generation. Then we cycle to visit Wat Ta Such, the famous Buddhist Monk who has raised the money to build a beautiful Buddhist temple. After the water stop there, we continue cycling to Wat Noti Picharam. We stop for packed lunch. After lunch finish cycling at 65km and transfer 40 minutes Pursat Riverside Hotel. Enjoy swimming and dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Pursat - Battambang (70km)
After breakfast, we transfer 60km to Moung Russei and cycle to Kos Kralor. We stop for lunch at Kos Kralor district. After lunch cycle to Banan temple to visit the 12th century hill top temple. Then have a picnic lunch at the lake at the foot of Banan temple hill. After lunch we cycle to take the bamboo train located on the other side of the Banan hill. Afternoon, cycle the last 25km to our hotel in Battambang. Dinner and overnight in Battambang. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Battambang-Siem Reap (15km)
An early breakfast before transferring to board on the boat to Siem Reap. The boat runs from October to February as the water will be lower from February onward (If the boat does not operate we have to cycle transfer and cycle 40-50km to Siem Reap). The boat hs jacket and takes about 6 - 7 hours. It is one of the best boat trip in Cambodia to cross the Sangker river viewing the fishermen and all their activities on the river. Then crossing Tonle Sap lake (South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake). It is the main reserve for water when the Mekong is flooded, without the lake, Cambodia will be flooded every year. In rainy season, the water reaches 10,000 square Km when it is only 5,000 square Km in dry season. The lake is as important as for the human-being and the fish, birds and other wild animals. One hour before reaching the dock, the boat passes Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary home and breeding area for some thousands of water birds.
After crossing Tonle Sap lake, we arrive at Chong Kneas floating village. The village combines of Cambodian, Muslim and Vietnamese and they move up and down depends on the season. All the houses are floating with support of the bamboo. After arrival at the dock, get off and prepare to ride bicycle 15km to our hotel. Overnight in Siem Reap.
Day 6: Siem Reap-Angkor Complex (35km by bicycle)
Depart from the hotel on the main road and cycling through Angkor pass check point. Cycling through the shady road with a little pumping because of the a few pot-holes. There you will begin to see Kravan temple, Banteay Kdei, and stop at the famous Ta Phrom, embraced by the roots of enormous fig trees and gigantic creepers. Visit Ta Phrom (45 minutes-1 hour). It was built in 12th century by the famous King Jayavarvan VII indicated to his mother. While clearing back the forest archaeologists decided to leave the vegetation of Ta Phrom in place to serve as a reminder of how the original discoverers found it and the other Angkor temples. Many of the trees have grown around and through the remains and soar high above the temples. Continue the cycling through small circuit passing Ta Keo temple, Chao Say Tevoda, Tommanon before reaching to Angkor Thom city. There you will see, Terrace of Leper King, Terrace of Elephant, Baphoun, Phimean Akas. Stop at Bayon temple and start the visit (45 minutes-1 hour). Angkor Thom built by Cambodia's great king, Jayavarman VII. An eight-meter high wall encloses this ten square kilometre city, which is encircled by a moat. The famous Bayon, in the geographical heart of Angkor Thom, is a remarkable 54 tower temple. Initially the temple appears to be a shapeless mass of grey and brown stone, but it is only as you get closer that you realize every tower has the carved face of Avalokiteshvara on it.
After the visit, cycle to Angkor Wat to finish the small circuit. Stop at South Gate of Angkor Thom for taking photo. Access via a causeway over the moat that are flanked by statues of Gods on the left and devils on the right. Then visit the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat. It is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. Angkor Wat is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five beehive-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. Suryavarman II constructed Angkor Wat in the form of massive 'temple mountain' dedicated to the Hindu god,Vishnu. Overnight in Siem Reap.
Day 7: Tonle Sap Lake - Kampong Phluk (50km)
Depart from the hotel, crossing the bridge at Old Market to cycle 15km toward Rolous Group. The first 2km, is on the tarmac road toward the bus station. Then, passing the rice field and the village. cycling to Tonle Sap Lake passing small road along the river through villages, pagodas and schools. This road is good for cycling as to avoid the busy traffic. After cycling 8km, turn right across the bridge to the main road as there is no further access on the small road. Continue cycling toward the lake about 3km (July-December) where the boat stop. (Note: January-June, the water is low and the boat will stop further 3km). Board on the boat to visit the village on water, school, fishing farm. After 1 hour boat drive. Return the Siem Reap on the main road to avoid cycling the same road. Afternoon, free at leisure to relax. Dinner and overnight in Siem Reap.
Day 8: Depart Siem Reap
Breakfast at the hotel. Free until transfer to the airport for departure flight.
